Joyce Leola McPhail
1934 - 2017

Joyce Leola Kirkpatrick McPhail, 83, of Fayetteville, formerly of Chelyan, passed away Thursday, September 21, 2017. She was the daughter of Bert Kirkpatrick and Sadie Kirkpatrick Richards of Ohley.

She was preceded in death by both parents; sisters, June Carter, Alberta Cochran and Helen Carroll; and by her husband, the love of her life, John Menzies McPhail, on July 31, 2004. They were married for 53 years.

Joyce worked for the State of WV Department of Health and Human Services for 33 years. Besides working for the State, she was very community minded. She helped establish the Human Service Credit Union for State Employees and, closer to home, she was involved in the establishment of the Chelyan Public Service District, where she served for years. Through that work, she saw water and sewer improvements for Chelyan as well as surrounding areas such as Cabin Creek. She was also instrumental in the creation of a Community Watch Program for the Chelyan area.

She attended the Chelyan Methodist Church where she was Saved and Baptized. When moving to Fayetteville in 2009, she became a member of Grace Baptist Church. She had many, many loving friends that she held dear to her. We would like to thank Linda Buckland for being such a special friend.

To say Joyce was a devoted wife, mother and friend to many would be an understatement. There was nothing she loved more than her family, including her extended family. She is survived by her four children, Connie (Tim) Brown of Fayetteville, Johnnie (Truman) Hudson of Hernshaw, William McPhail (Sharon Vaughan) of Dunbar and Rita (Jeff) Youell of Sarver, Pa. She was the very proud Granny to Eli Brown, Rachel Brown, Rebecca McPhail, John McPhail, Marcus (Paul) Allison, Jason (Philip) Allison, Andrew Youell, Christopher Youell and David Youell. She was also the Great-Granny Joyce to Clara Brown, Thad Brown, Jacob Brown, Emily Allison, William McPhail, Garrett Samples, Owen Samples, Augustus Youell, Marigold Youell and Kaden Youell. One sister, Shirley Longsworth of Cross Lanes, also survives her.

The funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, September 25, at Stevens & Grass Funeral Home, Malden, with her son-in-law, Pastor Jeff Youell, officiating. The burial will follow the service at Montgomery Memorial Park, London. Visitation with family and friends will be from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday at the funeral home.

  Note from Danny VanCamp

Joyce McPhail worked for years in Bob Cline’s Division doing statistics. She also lastly worked in Quality Control. She was an outstanding person and employee. She was one half of the duo of ”M&M’ that wrote the various funny skits that were performed in the Department's Christmas “shows”.

I don’t know who was the other 'M' but we all enjoyed these times together for which as far as I know she never received any credit for doing this.
