John H. Conley, 87, of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Berkeley Springs and Vienna, W.Va., died Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at St. Anthony's Hospital in St.
Petersburg [FL].
The 11th of 12 children, he was born in Reedy, W.Va., on July 11, 1921, to the late James and Ethel Hughes Conley.
A proud veteran of World War II, he engaged in active combat on European fronts.
He earned B.S. and M.S. degrees from West Virginia University, and served as teacher and administrator in Morgan County, W.Va., schools for 36 years, retiring in 1982.
For over 50 years, he was a member of Deford Lodge 88 A.F. and A.M. and the Berkeley Chapter 77, Order of the Eastern Star in Berkeley Springs. For over 45 years, he was an officer and active member of the Berkeley Springs Lions Club.
From 1999 to 2008, he and his wife Freda divided their time between Vienna and St. Petersburg, participating actively in both Christ United Methodist Church in St. Petersburg and St. John United Methodist Church in Vienna. Always proud of his West Virginia heritage, he was a member of WV State Society in St. Petersburg.
He was married for 66 years to Freda Dodge Conley, who survives him. He is also survived by daughter, Dr. Joyce K. Conley of Annapolis, Md.; and son, John David Conley of Vienna. Surviving brothers are James Conley of Charlotte, N.C., and Gordon Conley of St. Albans, W.Va.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 28, 2009, at Westminster Suncoast Retirement Community, 6909 Dr. MLK St. South, St. Petersburg, FL 33705.
