Lowell T. Harmison, Ph.D, 74, passed away on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at
Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg, VA. Lowell spent over 45 years
at the forefront of medical research and public health. He was a graduate
of Berkeley Springs High School. He received his Masters at West Virginia
University, his Ph.D at University of Maryland and his Post Doctorate at
University of Michigan. He developed and holds the patent on the first
completely implantable artificial heart and he led the development of the
first HIV/AIDS blood test. Survivors include his wife; three sons from a
previous marriage; seven grandchildren; and a brother. A funeral service
will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, April 11 at Aquia Episcopal Church,

(Largent) and Charles Harmison on March 20, 1937 in North River Mills, West
Virginia. Lowell spent over 45 years at the forefront of medical research
and public health. He was a graduate of Berkeley Springs High School, West
Virginia University with his Masters, University of Maryland for his PhD
and his Post Doctorate at University of Michigan. Lowell is survived by
his wife, Sally and his three sons from his prior marriage to Patricia
Omps Harmison, Christopher and his wife Monica and their children Julia
and Charlie; Brian and his wife Leigh and their children Hannah and Kelly;
Craig and his wife Erin and their children Brooke, Mallory and Courtney;
and his brother Philip and his wife Juanita and their three children John,
Susan, and Gregory.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday April 11, 2011 at
Aquia Episcopal Church, Stafford Virginia. Interment will follow in the
church cemetery. The family will receive friends after the services in the
church fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the
Aquia Episcopal Church, Stafford Virginia; the West Virginia University
College of Engineering; or to a charity of the donor's choosing.
